Economic Development Corporation Highlights Award Winners at
72nd Annual Meeting
Rutland Economic Development Corporation’s
(REDC) 72nd Annual Meeting will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday,
November 12, 2009, at South Station Restaurant. Peter
Giancola of Giancola Construction Corporation is being awarded
REDC’s “Member of the Year”. “We are
recognizing Pete for his many years of service to REDC”,
stated James Stewart, Executive Director of REDC. “Pete
played a critical role in managing the build out of the Rutland
Airport Business Park, which is nearing completion after more
than twenty five years. His countless hours to the organization
through his tenure as an officer and support of REDC’s
operations over the past decade are very much appreciated and
do not go unnoticed.” Peter has followed his parent’s,
Joe and Barbara Giancola, example in his volunteer services
for the support of the Rutland Region.
Two “Business Excellence” awards will be awarded
to Central Vermont Eye Care and Vermont Wood Pellet Company.
Stewart stated, “These two businesses are assets to the
Rutland region. They are examples of the high quality of employers
we have in the Rutland area who, even in these difficult economic
times, have been able to create new high wage jobs.”
Central Vermont Eye Care is being recognized for job creation,
hi-tech services and its new green building. CVEC has built
a new facility located at 69 Allen Street in Rutland which opened
in June, 2009 and is awaiting LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) certification by keeping the construction
and maintenance as “green” and environmentally friendly
as possible. CVEC has a staff of 8 and have plans to hire more
in the coming year. Dr. Praveen Keshava stated, “Since
moving to our building, we have been able to implement the latest
diagnostic and treatment tools used in my field. We now offer
high-tech lens implant surgery to all our patients, and we're
the first practice in Rutland to do so. These lens implants
represent the forefront in cataract surgery. We plan on offering
advanced custom laser vision correction surgery in the first
quarter of 2010. We will be utilizing the world's best technology...it's
the same laser platform that NASA uses for its pilots! The facility
also has a full-service optical dispensary onsite – VT
Optical, as well as Optometrist Christina Huth.
Vermont Wood Pellet Company is being recognized for job creation
and its green initiatives. Vermont Wood Pellet Company is the
first operating wood pellet manufacturer in Vermont. The company
produces premium high BTU wood pellets at competitive prices.
Vermont Wood Pellet Company was started by Katie Adams and partner
Chris Brooks and the company has grown to fifteen employees.
“All logs are harvested from local Vermont woodlots, are
processed locally and the pellets are distributed for sale locally.
‘Now Vermonters can truly Heat Local’, stated Adams.”
