Congratulations to VELCO CEO Tom Dunn and his team on the Vermont Weather Analytics Center! Dunn presented VELCO’s breakthrough work on grid resilience and sustainability during the Senator Leahy Business Breakfast at the Vermont Chamber Business and Industry EXPO last week.
The Vermont Weather Analytics Center is a powerful energy data and analytics tool that combines high resolution weather forecasting—72 hours in advance, precise to 1km2—with customer demand data and the most accurate solar and wind generation models in the world. The actionable information produced by the models not only provides the opportunity to manage the grid more efficiently and effectively, it enables Vermont utilities to better protect communities, meet customer needs, and garner renewable energy’s full value.
The project is a collaboration between VELCO and IBM, and involves dozens of in-state and regional partners. It earned VELCO a place among the eight finalists (including Green Mountain Power) for this year’s Edison Electric Institute Innovation Award, the electric industry’s most prestigious award.
Dunn said the Vermont Weather Analytics Center is emblematic of VELCO’s 60-year evolution from a company focused first on operations, then on major construction projects, and now on data and information. This effort supports VELCO’s goal to provide a flexible, uplifting platform for innovation that is flexible, dynamic, and open access, and that is responsive to megatrends impacting the electric industry, including the increase in extreme weather events, the exponential increase in renewable generation, and the vast data available through smart meters.
