The State of Vermont’s Department of Economic Development offers a wide variety of resources and programs to assist with businesses of all sizes. In Rutland County, one of the resources often utilized is the Vermont Training Program (VTP). VTP partners with employers in the region to help prepare employees for the jobs of tomorrow through performance-based workforce grants for pre-employment training, training for new hires, and training for incumbent workers.
John Young, Workforce Development Programs Director, frequently visits Rutland County’s employers who have received funding or are in the process of applying for a grant to improve their workforce. VTP has been a resource for area employers for over 30 years and can offer grants to cover up to 50% of training costs. In 2018, VTP served over 2,000 Vermonters, 518 of which were from the Rutland and Bennington counties service region. VTP provided grant funding to four employers in our region and awarded $568,189. The four employers varied in company size and industry and represented different towns in Rutland County.
In 2017, VTP worked with Kalow Technologies in North Clarendon. Eric Lapp said of the experience,
“The VTP helped us with many key new hires and keeps our veteran staff current and employed. We look forward to learning more problem-solving skills next to stay competitive and vital to our region and the state’s economy. We hope Montpelier sees the value in supporting local companies in Vermont and the important investment in our working youths’ future.”
In addition to directly supporting our region’s businesses, VTP also awarded a pipeline development grant to the Vermont Talent Pipeline Management (VTPM) to help fund activities that will aid in the discovery of needs and pain points for employers. VTPM is housed under the Vermont Business Roundtable and is an employer-led, data-driven process for filling the most critical jobs in Vermont’s workforce. VTPM surveys Rutland’s employers and invites them to join in frequent conversations regarding their current and future workforce needs.
The VTP is open to all sectors, see if your company meets the eligibility to participate here.
